The local Aboriginal community is being asked to provide their ideas and input into the creation of two on-country Healing Centres in Victoria.

Being led by the Victorian Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisation (VACCHO), the establishment of the two on-country Healing Centres was a recommendation of the recent Royal Commission into Victoria’s mental health system.

To gather the feedback of our mob, VACCHO staff will be at GEGAC on Monday, December 4, to discuss what the healing centre service model should look like, what services it should offer, and what types of supports are required for different cohorts.

  • What: On-Country Healing Centres Community Input Session
  • When: Monday, 4 Dec. 11am – 2:30pm
  • Where: The Elders Lounge/HACC meeting room at GEGAC, Dalmahoy Street, Bairnsdale.

Contact: If you have any questions about engagement or would like to know more about the Healing Centre design, please contact the project lead Nikki Foy at

The Royal Commission also recommended the establishment of an Aboriginal Centre for Excellence in Social and Emotional Wellbeing.

As a result, the Balit Durn Durn Centre was established in May 2022, with the mission of improving mental health and wellbeing services for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
